In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate

The Omnipresence of Allah (Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā)

In the Light of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah ﷺ

(Istiwāʾ upon the Throne, Rejection of Hulūl, Manifestation of Divine Attributes, the Limits of Human Reason, and the Practical Impact of this Belief on a Believer’s Life)

This article is a comprehensive explanation of a foundational Islamic belief upon which strength of faith, correctness of actions, and inner peace of the heart depend.

Islam teaches that Allah Subḥānahu wa Taʿālā is present everywhere, but this presence must be understood with a correct, balanced, and Qur’anic understanding, so that neither anthropomorphism (likening Allah to creation), nor false ideas such as hulūl (incarnation) or ittiḥād (union), nor weakness in practical conduct arise.

1) The Omnipresence of Allah — the Correct, Safe, and Balanced Meaning

Islam does not teach that:

• Allah is confined within a place, or

• Allah enters into a human, a room, or any created thing.

Rather, Islam teaches that:

Allah is transcendent and above creation with respect to His Essence,

and

He is present everywhere with respect to His Knowledge, Power, Hearing, Seeing, and Complete Encompassment.

Allah Almighty says:

“And He is with you wherever you may be.”

(Sūrah al-Ḥadīd 57:4)

This “being with” is not physical or spatial. Rather, it means:

• Being with His knowledge,

• Being with His watchfulness,

• Being with His power and authority.

In other words, whether a person moves or remains still, speaks or remains silent—Allah’s knowledge is with him at every moment.

2) Allah’s Knowledge — Not Only Outward Actions, but Inner States Too

Allah Almighty says:

“Do you not see that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth?”

(Sūrah al-Mujādilah 58:7)

In the same verse, Allah further says:

﴿مَا يَكُونُ مِن نَّجْوَىٰ ثَلَاثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمْ وَلَا خَمْسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمْ﴾

“There is no secret conversation of three but that He is their fourth, nor of five but that He is their sixth.”

This verse makes it clear that:

• A whisper behind closed doors,

• A hidden intention in the heart,

• A sudden change of resolve,

all are fully known to Allah.

Because of this awareness, a believer avoids showy or hypocritical acts of worship, knowing that Allah looks at intentions, not merely outward appearances.

3) Allah’s Nearness — Closer Than the Jugular Vein

Allah Almighty says:

“And We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”

(Sūrah Qāf 50:16)

This nearness is:

• Not physical closeness,

• Not closeness of distance,

but rather:

• Nearness of knowledge,

• Nearness of power,

• Nearness of inner watchfulness.

A human being does not fully comprehend the depths of his own heart, yet Allah knows even the thoughts that arise within it. This is why intention (niyyah) holds such a central place in Islam.

4) Prophetic Hadith ﷺ — The Living Awareness of Allah’s Presence

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ defined the highest level of faith, Iḥsān, as follows:

“Iḥsān is that you worship Allah as if you see Him; and if you do not see Him, then know that He sees you.”

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

This hadith shows that faith is not merely an intellectual belief, but a constant awareness of Allah’s watchfulness.

When this awareness is alive, a person avoids sin even in solitude, because the very concept of being “alone” disappears.

5) A Fundamental Belief — Allah Does Not Indwell in Creation (No Hulūl)

Islamic creed is absolutely clear:

Allah does not indwell within His creation

Hulūl means believing that:

• Allah enters into a human or an object, or

• The Creator and creation merge into one reality.

This belief directly contradicts the Qur’an. Allah Almighty says:

“There is nothing whatsoever like Him.”

(Sūrah al-Shūrā 42:11)

Allah is the Creator, and creation is limited. Preserving this distinction is the very foundation of Tawḥīd.

6) Manifestation of Divine Attributes in Creation — Not Hulūl

Here lies a subtle yet essential distinction:

Allah’s Essence does not enter creation,

but

the effects and manifestations of His Attributes appear within creation.

For example:

• A mother’s compassion → a manifestation of Allah’s attribute of Mercy,

• A scholar’s knowledge → a granted reflection of Allah’s attribute of Knowledge,

• A judge’s justice → a reflection of Allah’s attribute of Justice.

Allah Almighty says:

“And Allah created you and what you do.”

(Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt 37:96)

These are gifts and manifestations—not incarnation.

7) The Example of the Sun and Its Light — Explained Fully

The sun:

• Remains in its own place,

• Yet its light spreads everywhere.

No external force can stop sunlight from spreading.

Darkness, however, is not an independent entity—it is merely the absence of light.

When sunlight falls upon a wall:

• The wall does not become the sun,

• Nor does the sun enter the wall.

Only the effect of light appears.

Applying This Example to Allah’s Light

Allah Almighty says:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.”

(Sūrah al-Nūr 24:35)

Allah’s Light is:

• Far more powerful than sunlight,

• Perfect,

• Dominant.

Yet:

• Shirk,

• Impure intentions,

• Arrogance and stubbornness,

are the darknesses that seal the heart.

The Light is not deficient—the heart is closed.

😎Awareness of Allah’s Presence — A Believer Is Never Alone

When a believer truly believes that:

• Allah is everywhere,

• Allah sees him,

• Allah hears him,

then:

• He never feels abandoned,

• He does not collapse in hardship.

Allah Almighty says:

“Indeed, Allah is with those who are patient.”

(Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:153)

This belief plants patience, courage, and inner peace in the heart.

9) The Impact of This Belief on Actions

Allah Almighty says:

“Does he not know that Allah sees?”

(Sūrah al-ʿAlaq 96:14)

When this belief is strong:

• Hands stop before committing sin,

• Speech becomes cautious,

• Modesty enters the gaze.

When this belief weakens:

• Fear of Allah diminishes,

• Accountability fades,

• Actions deteriorate.

10) A Crucial Question: If Allah Is on the Throne, How Is He Everywhere?

Allah Almighty says:

“The Most Merciful rose over the Throne.”

(Sūrah Ṭā Hā 20:5)

The principle of Ahl al-Sunnah is:

Al-istiwāʾ maʿlūm, al-kayf majhūl, wa al-īmān bihi wājib

Meaning:

• Istiwāʾ is affirmed,

• Its “how” is unknown,

• Belief in it is obligatory.

Allah is:

• On the Throne with respect to His Essence,

• Everywhere with respect to His Attributes.

The Throne itself is created, and Allah is not dependent upon it.

11) The Limits of Human Reason and the Greatness of Allah

Allah Almighty says:

“And they cannot encompass Him in knowledge.”

(Sūrah Ṭā Hā 20:110)

Allah is above all universes.

Our world, within the vast cosmos, is no more than a tiny point.

Allah Almighty says:

“The creation of the heavens and the earth is far greater than the creation of mankind.”

(Sūrah Ghāfir 40:57)

When a person understands that:

• Allah is above the Throne,

• Yet how He is there is beyond human intellect,

humility enters the heart, arrogance breaks, and true reverent fear (khashyah) is born.

Summary

✔️Allah is present everywhere with His knowledge and power

✔️Allah does not indwell in creation

✔️Divine Attributes manifest in creation, not the Divine Essence

✔️Allah is above the Throne, yet how is beyond human reason

✔️Awareness of Allah’s presence ensures a believer is never alone

✔️This belief forms the foundation of taqwā, sincerity, and upright character
