Introduction

The term Mawlid an-Nabi ﷺ refers to the remembrance and celebration of the blessed birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

In the Qur’an and Hadith, the Prophet’s ﷺ coming into this world is described as the greatest blessing and mercy from Allah.

At the same time, the Qur’an commands believers to rejoice when they receive Allah’s blessings and mercy.

Thus, the essence of Mawlid is not merely festivity — it is gratitude, love, and commitment to follow the Messenger ﷺ.

1. The Greatest Mercy — The Messenger of Allah ﷺ

Qur’an:

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ (Al-Anbiya: 107)

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”

This verse makes it clear that the coming of the Prophet ﷺ into this world is the greatest mercy. If Allah commands us to rejoice upon receiving His mercy, then rejoicing over the greatest mercy is a requirement of faith.

2. Allah’s Command — Rejoice in His Mercy

Qur’an:

قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا (Yunus: 58)

“Say: In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy — in that let them rejoice.”

The greatest example of Allah’s mercy is the Prophet ﷺ. Thus, rejoicing over his birth is an application of this Qur’anic command.

3. The Sunnah of Rejoicing Over His Birth

Sayyiduna Abbas (RA) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ informed of a reduction in Abu Lahab’s punishment in the Hereafter because he freed his slave-girl Thuwaybah in joy at the Prophet’s ﷺ birth. (Bukhari)

If a disbeliever can receive relief from punishment for rejoicing at the Prophet’s ﷺ birth, how much more will a believer be rewarded for it?

4. Worldly Custom — Whose Birthday Is Celebrated?

In worldly tradition, the birthday is celebrated only for someone who is alive.

The Prophet ﷺ is alive in his grave, responding to the greetings of his Ummah. Both the Qur’an and authentic Hadith affirm his life in the Barzakh.

5. The Prophet’s ﷺ Blessed Life and Acceptance of Salām

There is not a single moment when salutation (salām) upon the Prophet ﷺ is not being recited somewhere in the world.

This means the Prophet ﷺ is continually connected to his Ummah, and his blessed body remains alive in Barzakh.

6. Worldly Custom — Invitation

In worldly etiquette, people attend a celebration only if they have a connection to it and are invited.

Mawlid gatherings are a form of inviting the Prophet ﷺ through love — a sign of connection and devotion.

7. Worldly Custom — Bringing a Gift

It is customary to bring a gift on a birthday — either according to one’s own means or according to the honour of the person being celebrated.

Allah has taught us that the gift for the Prophet’s ﷺ birthday is salāh and salām (durūd), which reaches him directly.

8. The Prophet’s ﷺ Acceptance and Response

The Prophet ﷺ is Raḥmat lil-‘Ālamīn — the Mercy to all worlds. When anyone sends him salām, he not only accepts it but also responds with salāmah (peace).

This returned peace is the key to success in both worlds.

9. Mawlid and the Question in the Grave

When in the grave we are asked: “What did you say about this man?”, the heart and tongue will naturally reply:

“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Rasūl Allāh ﷺ, as-salāmu ‘alayka yā Ḥabīb Allāh ﷺ.”

That salām will be the means of salvation, and the moment will come when the Prophet ﷺ responds with peace.

10. The Real Purpose of Mawlid

The true purpose of Mawlid is not only to express joy, but also to:

 • Proclaim love for the Prophet ﷺ

 • Follow his Sunnah

 • Thank Allah for His greatest blessing

 • And live with the prayer that in the grave we may behold the Prophet ﷺ and a window to Jannah be opened for us

Du‘ā

O Allah! Make the birth of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ a joy in our hearts, a constant remembrance on our tongues, a light in our path, a blessing in our lives, and a cause for our success in this world and the Hereafter.
